UP TO DATE RIVER NEWS
3rd. FEBRUARY 2012
Would Scott Ireland and Kieran Parish please contact the Chairman.
We have already held the first two new members meetings. There are still a few places available. Our free fly tying classes and free fly casting lessons will be starting very shortly. You are well advised to join the club as soon as possible, otherwise you will miss out on these free lessons and be way down in the training programs before the season starts. We would like all new members to be fully competent in all aspects of fly fishing before the first stocking. Please ring the Chairman David Picton-Davies on 01443 432289 between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. for details of the next new members meeting. River permits are now available at all our usual outlets.

It's Official - Our River Rhondda is Excellent
More good news regarding our fish stocks in the river Rhondda. Hull University have sent the letter below stating that the tests they did in our stretch of the river were top class A and B. Out of 600 rivers throughout England & Wales our stretch is in the top six. So for all you doubters out there, read the letter below and appreciate the fantastic fishing in the River Rhondda thanks to the management and stocking policy of Glyncornel Angling Association. These tests were done late last September before this season's stocking so this year we can expect even better results when they test in late August/September. For all you whingers out there that don’t even buy a permit, if you want to fish in a better stocked river, try another country. We hope our permit holders who pay for their fishing have a great time for the rest of the season this year and next year.
Further to our previous correspondence, I will try and provide a more useful summary of the brown trout we caught during our electric fishing surveys on the Rhondda Fawr in August 2010 (length of river fished = 50 metres at each site, as per standard practice).
To provide an indication of the status of brown trout populations in study sites the densities were compared to a database of over 600 Environment Agency Fisheries survey sites in England and Wales. The resulting population classification is based on a grading scale (A-F) and translates as follows: Grade A (excellent), Grade B (good), Grade C (fair or average), Grade D (fair/poor), Grade E (poor) and Grade F (fishless). Brown trout populations at both Ton Pentre and Brewsters were dominated by fish larger than 12 cm. The density of fish larger than 12 cm. at Ton Pentre was 24.6 fish per 100m2 and was classified as excellent (class A). The density of fish larger than 12 cm. at Brewsters was 16.7 fish per 100m2 and was classified as good (class B).
Kind regards

First River Photo in 15 Years
Top river angler Kieran Parish junior member has been having a tremendous time fishing this season with his friends at the river. Kieran and his friends have caught 6-8 fish on many occasions this year. They do not kill every fish they catch and most days they return all the fish they have caught to the river with great care to ensure that they catch fish every time they return to the river. The fish in Kieran’s hands is a 3 lb. 03 oz. Brown Trout caught in the Tonypandy area, which gave Kieran a magnificent fight for over 25 minutes before he could land it. Kieran used trotting a worm on the river bottom. Kieran uses a range of bait down the river, Sweet Corn, Bread, Spinners and Fly. He also caught three or four other fish on the day which he returned, giving him and his friends an enjoyable day at one of the top rivers in England & Wales. Kieran kindly sent me this photograph of one of the fish he caught. It is the first time in 15 years that a river photograph has been sent to the club. Kieran will be getting a free junior club river permit next year. If any permit holders have any photographs of fish caught at the river showing the river and surroundings just like this photograph, there is a possibility that you too, senior or junior could get a free permit for next season.
In other river news, the fishing is tremendous along the whole stretch of our river from Trehafod to Treorchy. All the usual spots are fishing well, another 6 lb. + fish has come out, a 5 lb., two 4 lbs. and numerous fish above 2 lb. No reports yet of the 8 lb. Brown Trout that was put in the river being caught, a good photograph of that is definitely worth a free permit next season and will break the river record of 6 lb. 08 oz. by a long way. Out of the dozen 6 pounders put in, only four have been recorded being caught. There were plenty of other big fish ranging from 2 lb. to 6 lb. put in. The club bailiffs have reported to the committee that the big fish are still holding in the river not far from where they were stocked and are still available to be caught. Also the bailiffs are still catching people down the river without permits. You must have a Glyncornel A.A. permit to fish. The environment agency licence does not entitle you to fish anywhere at any time and is merely a government tax on you fishing. Nine people have been caught without permits at the river, buy a permit if you haven’t got one otherwise you will be prosecuted and have your gear confiscated. You are stealing fish off people that have paid for them. Finishing on a happier note, the executive and committee of Glyncornel A.A. hope the permit holders will have an enjoyable and successful fishing experience at our stretch of the river.

Truckloads of Trout Fill the River Rhondda
Glyncornel Angling Association on their third stocking of the River Rhondda put two truckloads of fish into the river from the Stag in Treorchy down to Trehafod. The fish were put in at over 40 places in the river over the 12 mile stretch. Fish from 2 lb. to over 6 lb. were put in. Fishing has been excellent with many big fish coming out along the whole stretch of the river. Best reports of fish caught: Treorchy 4 lb. 10 oz., Pentre 5 lb. 06 oz., Ton Pentre many fish over 2 lb., Ystrad 4 lb. 12 oz., Llwynypia 3 lb. 10 oz., Tonypandy 5 lb. 5 oz. and 5 lb, Dinas 4 lb. 01 oz., Porth 5 lb. 12 oz. & 4 lb. 11 oz. with fish well over 2 lb. in weight being caught throughout the whole length of the river. Truly sensational fishing!
Non permit holders be aware that there are bailiffs at the riverside and over 20 people have been caught this season. Permits for the river are available at reasonable prices:- Adults £25 per season, Juniors £16 per season. If you do not buy a permit for the river the club will not have the money to buy the fish to stock the river with and you will be prosecuted and have your gear confiscated. For your own peace of mind buy a permit and relax while you fish without having to worry about bailiffs or police.

Good Times at the Riverside
Due to the heavy rain and the weather being much warmer the fishing catches throughout the whole stretch of Glyncornel A.A. waters has been very good over the last few weeks. Some nice fish have been coming out in Porth by the old Y.M.C.A., under the new bridge, in front of Dinas flats, Dinas Railway Station, by the Lord Tonypandy and throughout the whole of Tonypandy, Gelli Crossing, Gelli in general, Pentre, Ystrad and Treorchy all fishing well.
Spinners and worm seem to be the favourite methods at the moment, with sweet corn and bread also being successful. Biggest fish this month caught Y.M.C.A. Porth 3 lb. 10 oz., Gelli Crossing 4 lb. 2 oz. and several fish over the 3 lb. mark coming out from Pentre to Lower Treorchy. If you have any good river photographs with fish, including the river in the background, you could get a free permit for next season. Contact Chairman David Picton-Davies on 01443 432289 between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.
30th. APRIL 2011
Hottest April Ever
Sorry we are a bit late with the article for the last contest in April but we have had unforeseen circumstances beyond our control.
The river has gone from one extreme to another from being too cold and not helping the fishing to July-like weather with exceptionally low water levels which unfortunately delayed our second stocking for obvious reasons. The club is hopeing for some big downpours of rain to raise the river level which the river really needs at this present moment as the river is extremely low for this time of year.
Good news, Hull International Fisheries Institute which is the University of Hull have netted and electro-fished the river and there are unbelieveably high stocks of fish in the river. This survey was carried out late last August. Our stretch of the River Rhondda was voted the best Brown Trout river in Great Britain. For anyone that says there aren't any fish in the river and we do not stock it, I'm sorry to say you were very much mislead. Catches of fish on the river by Mr. A.E. Williams of Lower Treorchy, Pentre have been very good. He has caught several fish in the 1.5 to 3 lb range. Mr. J.A. Jones of Lower Pentre and Ystrad caught a 3 lb 08 oz Brown around the Ton Pentre Railway Station river area. He also told me there were some nice fish caught behind the old Barclays Bank alonside Ystrad Road Hill. Other spots: Gelli Sunnybank Bridge is fishing well, Gelli crossing by the bridge, the area up and around the river near Gelli Sports Center, the lord Tonypandy stretch of the river down to Dinas Station and your old favourite the new bridge in Porth down to Trehafod. Look for deep pools and fast flowing water.
If you have any river news, fish catch news, fish photographs or if you wish to know any more about the river or Glyncornel Angling Association please ring Chairman David Picton-Davies on 01443 432289 between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.
26th. MARCH 2011
Good Start to River Fishing
There have been good catches of fish on the River Rhondda from the Stag in Treorchy to Trehafod. Although the river water temperature is below normal but not as bad as last year, with the clubs first early fish stocking in late Feb. some nice fish have come out of the river. Biggest weight 3 lb. 2 oz. In Ystrad Pentre area with other nice fish in the 1 lb. to 2 lb. range caught in lower Treorchy, lower Tonypandy, Dinas and Porth.
There will be a special large fish size stocking in April.
The Bailiffs have reported that people have been caught and prosecuted for fishing without Glyncornel Angling permits. Without people buying our permits the river would not be stocked with fish. I would like to emphasise that no other organisation ever stocks the river with fish. The more permits sold, the more fish are put into the river. Although you must buy an environment agency permit, it does not entitle you to fish anywhere in the U.K. unless you have the local clubs permit or the land owners permission.
You must buy our permit to fish the River Rhondda.
We are sorry to hear about upper Rhondda’s Fish Farm stock being destroyed by criminal vandalism, and would like to emphasise after receiving many telephone calls, there is no effect in any way to the River Rhondda belonging to upper Rhondda or to our stretches from the Stag in Treorchy down to Trehafod being affected by this disgraceful incident.
River fishing permits are now available
£25 Adult per season, £16 Junior per season.
Only season permits available.
